Changing the oil filter element is a common maintenance operation, but why do oil leakage accidents occur from time to time?
In fact, in addition to the unfortunate purchase of low-quality engine oil filter elements, the main reason is that there is a problem with the installation operation.
According to the truth, the routine maintenance of replacing the filter element is not complicated, but it is often simple, but it is the most test of the operation details. Today, I will summarize the five standards for installing the spin on oil filter element.
Oil the sealing ring
Before installation, apply a small amount of engine oil to the sealing ring of the filter to provide lubrication and avoid dry friction between the sealing ring and the filter mounting seat during installation. Applying oil to the sealing ring of the filter helps to soften the rubber material of the sealing ring and reduce friction.
Before the installation of the oil filter, if the sealing ring is not smeared with oil, the sealing ring cannot slide smoothly in the groove and on the base during the installation and rotation. The sealing ring may be squeezed out of the groove, stuck on the groove wall of the sealing ring or outside the groove, resulting in poor sealing, and in the case of large rotating torque, the sealing ring will be damaged and cause oil leakage.
Tighten the filter according to the specified number of turns
Due to different shapes, sizes and matching models, the number of revolutions required for installation is also different. In view of this differential installation characteristics, the general filter housing will mark the number of tightening turns required after the rotating oil filter element fits the base. This step can usually be operated by hand.
Tighten the filter according to the specified torque
Finally, when a torque wrench is required, the fastening machine shall strictly follow the standard torque required by the product, generally 20nm. If you ignore the regulations and operate blindly, it is easy to cause excessive tightening torque of the filter, resulting in damage to the filter housing, fixing bolts, rubber sealing ring and filter seat. Moreover, the tightening torque is too large when installing the filter, and it is not easy to remove it when it is replaced in the next maintenance.
Do not add too much oil
Note that when adding oil, just ensure that the liquid level is between the upper and lower limits of the oil dipstick. When too much oil is added, the oil level in the oil pan will become very high, so that the fast moving blades of the crankshaft will contact the engine oil and inflate it, causing the foam to affect the power output of the engine. At the same time, the engine oil may rush into the combustion chamber to participate in combustion, resulting in the phenomenon of burning engine oil. Moreover, excess oil will generate excessive pressure inside the engine, which may overflow through various gaskets and seals, resulting in oil leakage.
Start the engine and check for leakage
After installing the filter and filling the oil, start the engine and run at idle speed to fully circulate the oil. Then, check whether there is leakage at the installation joint of machine filter through observation and wiping.
After it is confirmed that there is no oil leakage, shut down and stand still for a period of time, check the oil level again, and replace the filter only after it is confirmed to be normal.
Reminder:
If you want to replace the engine oil filter element without oil leakage, the premise is to select the genuine engine oil filter element with guaranteed quality. Secondly, although the replacement process is simple, do not operate at will. Each link has accurate installation requirements and must be operated in accordance with the specifications.
